About this section
The Medicine and Society Section aims to bridge the gap between medicine and the other health and care professions, and the RSM and the external world. The Medicine and Society Section Council has members from diverse backgrounds who work collaboratively and creatively with other sections and other institutions, in partnership with patient and carer representatives. The Medicine and Society Section (previously called the Open Section) explores the potential, and the effects, of medical advances and scientific innovations on society, as well as changes in national policy, professional practice, and education, to explore how these can improve outcomes for patients, and the working environment for staff.
We have adopted three key themes with which to work in partnership with others for the next year or so: patient and public involvement; putting data that exists at system level to best use in the interest of care outcomes; inequality as a determinant of health; integration of systems, partnerships, collaboration between stakeholders; and getting the right infrastructure in place, e.g., built environment, data processing architecture, working with industry and SMEs.
We provide topical, interesting and varied inter-professional conferences, espousing a multi-dimensional - physical, mental, social and spiritual - understanding of health and wellbeing in the context of change and transformation of health systems. The Medicine and Society Section Council is always open to new ideas and suggestions, do get in touch if you have ideas that you would like to explore with us.

Section meetings and conferences are usually organised by members of the Section Council, led by the Section President and often in collaboration with specialist societies.
